My VP of HR is certified, and strongly believes in continued training. When I received my certification, my General Manager and VP together decided that I should get a raise. It was worth it to me, and I too, often see requests for the certificati…

HI Talley - I see you are in KC. I took the prep course at JCCC. (dont have to be a KS resident) Great teacher! Her classes pass rate well surpasses the national. It was Saturday mornings for about 2 1/2 months. I have heard the the one in Lib…

I had a 3rd shift employee who was a no call, no show one day. The next day he came to work and told his supervisor that the reason that he missed work and did not call was because he had gotten a home perm the evening before and his head was burne…

Very cool, Don! And as I have told you before, you definitely keep us on our toes and thinking. I am sure that many others, including myself, really enjoy your input on all of these topics. And I agree with everyone, this job is great because of …

Lessons learned is right! Thanks everyone for your comments and support. And Parabeagle, I will do that from now on.

Thanks, Don. I hope you are right. She is actually a very smart girl. She has had some pretty decent jobs in the past. When she starts throwing around 'harrassment and hostile environment' lawyers ears perk up - and we are the 'co-employer'.

Thanks for all your comments. Well, to make an even longer story short- I called the agency and we decided to release her, the agency called her Sat., she argued/discussed with them for 1 hour, they thought it was settled and she showed up to work M…

Our drivers are tested annually per DOT regulations, and also included in the random testing that is done quarterly. We have a policy in the handbook, and we have everyone sign this policy just before they are tested again. Our quarterly random te…

I am not sure if that is legal, I know these gurus can give you the correct answer. One suggestion, though...You could advertise in papers that have a "mature" audience.

My opinion would be that if it is not clear in your policy, as it seems, then look for past history to see what has been done. If there is none, you decide how you want to do it and then do it that way from now on.

Don - Congratulations on your new position. I, also, always look for your repsonses on posts as I know that they will be informative, truthful, and humorous. I feel that I have learned quite a bit from you, just by reading your posts. Thanks. Yo…

Our cell phone agreement basicallly just states that X employee has received cell phone, with the phone # and serial # listed, and states that if they lose or damage or don't return the phone it will cost them $75 - our replacement cost - and it wil…

We use the last four digits of the social security # as I stated before, but add our location # at the front of that. We have not had a duplicate yet. We have been unable to use a # when we re-hire someone as ADP will not accept it. We just raise…

We just use the last 4 digits of social security number.

Without an EAP, that makes it difficult. Perhaps you can still just suggest that he see a doctor. It seems that it could become a liability to your company as he has told you these things already. Also, it goes back to the post about if you do req…

We also train annually.

Perhaps while re-writing the policy, make the 2nd issue a discplinary situation.

I think that's a great thought. We try to do that here, also. Not the same thing, but, for example, we moved to a new neighborhood and a week later someone was shot (not an employee) right outside our building in the wee hours of the morning. Our…

While I agree with everyone, I wonder why, if you have an EAP, you can't just remind him of it, and let him decide if it is something that he needs. This is something that my company strongly suggests. I just want to clarify what I am reading. By…
