I'm in Nashville and the 8.5% was the number for January as reported on the TN DOL website. The waiting line at the Career Center was in Murfreesboro. I'm not 100% sure on this but I think they had advertised for several positions in the Sunday paper the day before which, if so, may have prompted the unusual response.
Memphis is running pretty close to the state rate at 8.6%. But there are counties close by that are seeing rates as high as 18% - 27%. It is definitely getting tougher out there; especially in the more rural areas. I am thankful every day for my job.
I don't think anyone has seen unemployment numbers that high in 70-80 years. It makes me wonder if we'll start seeing population shifts due to people moving to where jobs are. And, boom cities. I bet those will develop in some areas too.
The whole economy mess is a bit scary but I tend to look at the long view and believe that this will pass.
I try to not pay too much attention to the day to day numbers and reports. It can be too overwhelming and depressing. I believe, like you Sharon, that this too shall pass. Some economists say as early as next year we could see a rebound. The business cycle is exactly that - cyclical - and we will come out of this hopefully a stronger nation. **==
