Animal House and The Blues Brothers are awesome movies, as well as Gone With the Wind (no my husband won't watch this one but has been known to show up at parties dressed in a toga introducing himself as "________ Class President, damn glad to meet ya"). Movies aren't what's non-negotiable for me...there are two things that my husband had to like and suck it up, that is any NASCAR race and Jimmy Buffett. Buffett wasn't that hard for him to get use to but he had a really hard time with races. Now he knows the drivers better than I do. We are actually anxious for Daytona on Sunday (I think we are suffering from football withdraw).
I'm going through just that problem with my girlfriend right now -- she's a NASCAR buff ('course, she's from 'Bama, so that's to be expected) and, to me, NASCAR is just a bunch of cars going around in circles... I'll take college football anyday!
Get it correct: they are turning LEFT! Bud Shoot Out was great - and it's time to GO RACING. My boyfriend and I are huge fans - now. One of our first outings was to Phx International for NASCAR weekend, so guess I was the one being tested. I passed - and now I'm really stuck - watched two hours of rained out qualifying yesterday! Heading to Vegas on the 27th.
With the boys of summer heading into spring training this month, football is a thing of the past! Course, I'm a Arizona Cardinals fan, so my season's been over since about mid-October.....
Parabeagle, you must attend a race to understand the attraction. You will never forget the feeling when 43 cars thunder to life (you feel it in your chest). Its something that can't be explained. Be a good boyfriend and buy two tickets to a race and go with her. Oh and buy a pit pass for both of you...NASCAR is the only sport where you can walk up to driver and ask for his autograph and he'll give it willingly with a smile (well all except Tony Stewart sometimes).
Let me tell you a funny story (I'm full of them). I was sitting at a traffic light one day (none to patiently I might add) and I yelled at the light....GREEN GREEN GREEN. From the back of my car comes my daughters voice...boogity, boogity, boogity (the infamous Darrell Waltrip saying when the green flag drops). That's my girl!! I laughed all the way home!
How do you girls manage the requirement that NASCAR fans either chew or dip and that they be able to drink a case of Pabst Blue Ribbon with a can of Spam at one sitting? On a personal note, I can tell you for certain any Monday whether a NASCAR event was the prior day, Sunday. Every other auto on the interstates around Jackson, Mississippi have white-knuckled drivers and approach the speed of sound on two wheels, max. (Pitouiiie)
I would do that, but I don't think they have NASCAR races in Portland. I know we do formula cars in the summertime, but I don't know if we have NASCAR.
Nope - closest you're going to get is Fontana, CA, or Sonoma CA (this is a road race - not near as much power but still a lot of fun - and they sometimes have to turn right!)
And Don, I'm shocked at you for holding up those stereotypes! I've never dipped or snuffed, and my boyfriend enjoys the occasional cigar while sipping Crown Royal. My goodness - those old southern bootleggers who started this sport are turning over in their graves!

No Parabeagle you don't have NASCAR in Portland. Fontana, California or Las Vegas would be the closest to you. Pass on Fontana and go for Vegas...super speedway...lots of excitement. If you want to impress your girlfriend...you need to learn who D.W. is, Little E, The Intimidator, The King (and it isn't Elvis), Mr Excitement, The Rainbow Warriors...oh the list could go on and on.

I'm one of those people that travel on two wheels at the speed of light and it doesn't have to be on Monday after the race. Have you ever driven in Philly? Two wheels are standard and brakes are optional on cars here.

Sorry, had to add my two cents in...I'm a die-hard NASCAR fan and have too gotten my husband into the excitement. He doesn't find going to the actual races as exciting as I do. I'm trying to get him to take me to another race this year...Dover or Bristol would do just nicely for me! Nothing like being there, hearing the cars roar and the fans enjoy it as well. My husband likes the commentary, so maybe nextime we'll have to get the headsets or bring a radio / small TV for him.
Yes, Gillian is from SoCal. Not much in this thread for me. I don't play golf, like foreign films and the only thing that I know about NASCAR is that our Environmental Health and Safety Officer went to Fontana one fine day because he was given tickets. He said that he spent more time on the freeway and getting in and out of the parking lot than he did at the race. He isn't going back.
Gillian: Where have you been? There is actually a Chinese movie out that is a remake of a NASCAR race with the actors lips moving faster than the car wheels. They spit sushi and drink canned rice-wine.

I was wondering how long it would take before someone mentioned the meandering, nonbusiness blathering. So, are you issuing a challenge? Should we drive for 100?
I think this might very well make it to 100. I've also noticed that Don has replied to this many times even though he was very adamant about this post having no redeeming quality at all in the beginnning(reply #2). Although I may have burst the bubble since I pointed out all this meadering, now people might stop replying. We shall see... and back to the original topic, I still say The Godfather is the best movie ever, followed by Godfather 2.

Being of the northern persuasion, I don't think NASCAR ever entered my consciousness at all until my transplanted to NC daughter informed me that she and her brand new husband would be leaving their wedding reception early - had to get to Charlotte for the big race the next day. When I turned the evil eye on my groomman son, he backed up and said, 'Sorry, I'm going with them.'
