I live in NYC and do not understand why the default language is Spanish? Why not Chinese? Why not Polish? Why not Yiddish? And, that may be problem. We are a polyglot city. In our New Jersey plant, we have ees who speak Spanish, Macedonian, Polish, Russian, Bulgarian, Farsi and Korean. It is extremely difficult to communicate with everyone-our translating costs are phenomenal (try find an OSHA booklet in some of these languages). However, they are good workers.
My one problem, as stated earlier, is that no one should be allowed to become an American citizen unless they speak language.
What the hell, I might as well join the bitch fest! I'm required to know Spanish to use the ATM, Hindi in order to talk to tech support for any of the numerous household electronic gadgets I own, Urdu in order to communicate with taxi cab drivers and certain bell hops at the airport, Arabic to pay for gas and NOw PIG lAtin in order to use the HR Hero Forum!
