  • I think very few of us would ever eat in a restaurant ever again if we only knew the half of what goes on in most. I have heard some real horror stories. I have convinced myself it just couldn't be that bad.
  • What about the amount of time marijuana stays in the system. Isn't it much longer than alcohol. Therefore, isn't it reasonable to think there would be residual side effects.

  • The most concerning thing to me is that Don is posting at 3:55 AM. Geez Don, get some rest man. Also, I wasn't aware the zigzag thread was supposed to be removed. You always learn on this site.
  • You just need to be sure management understands this is the policy from now on. It wouldn't be advisable to suspend this driver for a week and then the next one for 3 days because it's the busy season or another driver just quit and your shorthanded…

  • I'd do a little research to see how previous similar situations have been handled. This could be a very slippery slope.
  • Thanks for the input guys. I like your ideas and will proceed accordingly.
  • He drives a different kind of truck on his own than he does for us so contracting with him isn't an option. I agree with you guys that he is an accident waiting to happen. I'm just trying to uncover if there are reasons I shouldn't terminate.
  • He isn't required to log his hours for us due to an exemption granted due to his radius of travel and the nature of the business. I'm not sure of his logging requirements for his after hours hauls. That was my initial thought but it doesn't appear a…
  • I'm sorry, I didn't make myself clear. If Mary is the ee, would you provide the information concerning her family member to her coworkers so they would be aware of her plight.
  • Don, do you feel the same way about the family members of an ee? "Mary's child has been injured in an accident and is in critical condition at The Med" ??
  • Thanks for the input. I don't mind sharing face to face vague details of one's whereabouts and condition. However, I don't feel right about putting out a mass communication that so and so is in the hospital etc... Then I get the complaint that "we d…

  • Jeez Ray, lighten up! You have to admit it was humorous. Heck, I just read and laughed again.

  • Popeye,, There are literally dozens of schedule options to choose from and it all depends on your site's needs and culture. Most of the more reasonable involve 12 hour shifts. I assure you that you will be surprised at some of the reactions. Half wi…
  • Thanks Pork, I appreciate your input. I have tried all morning to get through to DOL in Tampa but I haven't had much luck. Your advice is sufficient.

  • Thanks Don, I have considered that option but there is some debate as to their ability to get the job done in 2 fewer hours each day. I really want to be fair to these employees but I'm also concerned about increasing our expenses in these already …

  • That request would then most likely be followed by the new suggestion that "due to a religious epiphany that occurred last night I can no longer work on Sunday at all due to my sincerely held religous beliefs."
  • I agree with Don. I've never heard of the requiremnt to update this document.

  • That is my understanding as well, Don. I would be interested if someone could show us the regulations that manadate benefits after a certain period of employment.
  • We have a division corporate office and the national corporate office along with about 200 local locations. We send a copy of the employment application, I-9, w-4 and any state tax forms to the national office where payroll is completed. We keep all…
  • I've used in-house suspension previously. I did it to make the point that whatever occurred was worthy of that level of discipline and documented as such. However, I didn't wish to further penalize the company by having this individual miss work. Ty…
  • I don't get it. Why would it be considered harassment just because he inquired as to her working at a club? Did I miss something?
  • I tend to agree with you. I don't think this is a good idea. Part of my question was what would our Short Term Disability carrier think about the employee working and still on leave. I would assume they would have some real questions about this EE's…
  • Don, I thought you were totally grossed out by the "bandit" post? Now you've got me cringing - "floats through the air" AGHHHH

  • I can't imagine a person with that title and the general responsibilities of a typical CFO could be anything but exempt. I do have a question about the part-time status, however. After he works 1000 hours he becomes elegible for 401(k) and pension,…
  • Is there no legal threshold that requires a company to offer benefits to an employee after working a certain number of hours per year? Can a company just declare an employee as temporary and not offer them benefits even though they are working 40 ho…
