Notice regarding reason for termination (RIF)

We just recently had to term a manager for purely economic (RIF) reasons.  Additional layoffs may be coming down the road, but nothing definite yet.  Do you think it best to put out a notice stating the "correct" reason, or just let the event filter out via word of mouth?  My hesitance is that other associates will percieve it to be for performance which is not fair to the former employee, however putting an email out like this may fuel panic amongst the remaining staff.  Any suggestions and/or verbiage for wording such a notice?

  • We had the exact same experience last week. I chose to send an email to all department heads with instructions to communicate with their groups in person about the one and only RIF. We stressed that no other reductions are planned at this time. I also instructed them to NOT just forward my email to their employees. This is one situation where employees need to hear directly from their manager.
