We require a 10-year employment history, but as a matter of course just verify the most recent 3 years. In the past I have been suspicious of applications which list "business closed or out of business" more than a couple of times as the reason for leaving; however, this economy is causing me to rethink the matter.

Any opinions on this, O Wise Ones?

We must get the same driver applicants. I do a google search to make sure that I cannot find the Company lurking out there with a little different address. Who do you use for your background checks? I switched last year after a Mock DOT audit and have found that the new service I use has lots of records and has made my back ground invesitgations much easier and more complete. The auditor I used said however, that the procedures we were following would protect us in a DOT audit.

Hey Parothead. If you don't find the company by googling, do you ask your applicants for tax returns w/ w-2's as proof of employment?

I do not. I have been able to verify at least a couple. With CSA2010 approaching we will have new tools at our disposal for looking at past records. Have you been working with anyone who can provide you with a look at what will be on the records for your current drivers?

We have gotten reporting from Vigillo. They can help you point out where your risks lie i.e. accidents, speeding violation etc.... Because we feel that the major impact that will be felt across the US with the implemenation of CSA 2010 we have also begun installing all new Qualcomms to allow all of our drivers autologging. This helps us with immediate tracking of logging violations, speed violations etc. Safety has always been our Motto but now it is our way of life

With rock and dirt being the "poor cousin" in the industry, we have just outfitted all of our trucks with Teltrac. So far, it has benefited us greatly.
