HR Hero on Facebook

HRHero has joined the social networking world with a page on Facebook. Anyone can see pages on Facebook by going to [url]http://www.facebook.com[/url] and typing in a keyword in the search box. But you will only be able to see a portion of the page. If you have a Facebook profile, you can see the entire page by logging in.

Check out the HR Hero page and let us know what you think. You can add it to the pages on your personal Facebook profile by by clicking on Become a Fan.

I get alot done on Facebook. My staff are on it all the time and they will ask me questions or just see how my day is going.

Glad to see you are now a fan of the page. We decided to join Facebook because social media is becoming a very important part of how many connect and communicate with each other. It also gives us the opportunity to reach out to existing groups on Facebook who have an interest in HR, employment law, and even "The Office" since we have a blog that takes an employment law spin on the show.

This is simply our first step into the world of social media and you'll see us doing more of this in the future. We would love to hear from you if there are things you like or don't like or would like to see changed. You all have never been hesitant to give your opinions in the past, so we're counting on you tell us what you think about it and whether you are using it.

Oh, and I'll have a picture of myself up soon, although I can promise it will not be of me running a half-marathon. I'm a faster knitter than runner.

Apparently Ray heard about Facebook and went looking for it his local library. So it may be awhile before any of us here have any constructive criticism for you that is helpful.

Every summer we hire 90 mostly college age staff to live here and work in our various departments. We created a Facebook group so that they could get to know eachother prior to arriving. It seemed to be helpful.

Lately Ive noticed more and more of my high school friends (now we are in our late 30s) joining Facebook.

Actually, I have had the same experience and that was what prompted me to join Facebook, because it was their preferred way of communicating. What had prompted them to join Facebook was that their kids were going off to college and it's the way the kids preferred to keep in touch on a daily basis. It really isn't just for teens and college students any more. Their parents are getting on board and so are the companies they work for.

Facebook is considerably less sleazy than Myspace. What is interesting to me is how my college age staff like to document every experience they have. Several of them have "vlogs" or video diaries. Others post photos or random thoughts. Its self absorption on a whole new level.

The URL you are attempting to access has been identified as Social Networking site and has been blocked. Organization policy prohibits accessing this type of site. I really feel deprived. Anyone have a good reason I could give IT to give me access?

Wellll,
There have been articles where HR has checked out potential hires on the social networking sites and found some incriminating pictures and information...
But then there is that whole legal thing about possibly finding out information that could cause you to discriminate.

there are all kinds of good reasons why you as an HR professional should have unfettered access to the latest social networking technology. Facebook is a recruiting tool for one thing. Just be warned. its a bit addictive.

It is for some people. For others it is a way to share interesting/fun links, etc. Some use it as a way to "broadcast" info to a large group quickly. There's a lot of stuff you can use it for.

I wanted to use it to instantly update job seekers on new openings or closed positions. If someone wanted to subscribe to the organization's Twitter feed, they would receive a text message on their cell phone and/or an alert on their PC everytime I changed the status of a position. I don't see anyone else doing that, but I think it has real potential.

So I am using Facebook today to communicate with a staff member that I have put in quarantine. Yeah, I get to do that. Resorts, like cruise ships, have to deal with flu-like illnesses very seriously. If a staff member has vomiting and diarrhea, they get quarantined.

Our staff member who was quarantined this morning just facebooked me to request ice water.

Ok, I checked out the article that Wendi supplied. I read the whole thing. I understand the concept. Now I ask, why?

Why would you want the world to know your, or what should be, private moments? Why would the universe care that you had a hotdog for lunch? Your mother would but the cosmos?
