Computer Clocks

Granted this wasn't the Y2K Bug, but we do have several computers scrattered around that for some rasons refuse to accept the new day light savings time; of course mine is one of them. As far as I know other than the nuisance of a few pc's with the wrong time everything of any vital importance seems to be working fine.

Ray, is getting accustomed to Day light savings time more difficult for folks that live in the eastern time zone? All I know is 5:00 A.M. sure seemed to come early this morning.

I have several clocks at home that supposedly receive their time via the airwaves from some clock in Colorado. None of those clocks changed time Sunday morning and are still running an hour behind.

Fortunately our PCs changed time but our security system wouldn't let anyone in the building this morning so I had to reset everything otherwise we would have to wait another couple of weeks for it to change to the correct time.

In my opinion this was worse the Y2K.

Actually, there is one advantage to this time change. We haven't told the dog yet, and we won't let her read the newspapers, so she doesn't know we changed the clocks. She isn't scratching at my door an hour before I want to get up. She's still on standard time.

That's understandable. Those little yippers must be unbearable when stressed. Our dog is old and just can't handle too much excitement. We won't let her watch Fox News anymore either.

I think what really made them hit the high stress level was the Barabaro story. When I explained what "euthanized" meant, they totally lost it. Or maybe it was when I said, "You're next."

Our IT lady was on top of this a few weeks ago. She was able to get all the proper patches from the vendors and got us all updated ahead of time. Our security system did not have patch, but we were able to go in and manually change to the new hours ahead of time.

I love it when folks do their job.

I was pretty impressed that my cell phone changed to the correct time all by itself.

But then, I was impressed when it changed to mountain time all by itself when I crossed over the Idaho border a couple of weeks ago.

I will pretty much look to my cell phone for direction now in these uncertain times.

Well I'm going to take this opportunity to make my semi-annual (light-hearted) public service announcement: Folks, it's not "daylight savingS time." It's SAVING. Daylight SAVING time. We're "saving" the daylight (okay, we're not really saving any daylight, we're just moving it to a different time, but that's where the expression comes from). But that's a good example: if we talked about "Daylight Moving Time," we wouldn't call it "Daylight Movings Time"! Though then again, maybe we would, given how "daylight savings time" seems to have taken over!

Hm...maybe I should start a "grammatical pet peeve of the week." Stay tuned for next week's installment: 'Use of the word "Literally."'

My grammar pet peeve is ending sentences with prepositions. It's amazing how this crude sentence structure has invaded our every day life from newscasts to newspapers to political speeches. I'm anal anyway and besides making sure all the cereal boxes are lined up in the cupboard in alphabetical order, I needed one more thing about which to be anal. (Did anyone, besides Marc, catch the irony in my last sentence?)

Oh, and happy birthday to 3.1416, or it's other nickname, C/D.

James Kilpatrick, pundit, court observer, and grammarian says that it is hogwash to use a preposition to end a sentence with. It is nothing more than a dumb rule imposed by stuffy old grammar school English teachers of a bygone era.

I heard the same thing about prepositional phrases at the end OF A SENTENCE.

I had an assistant who justified all her annoying behavior by reminding us that she was anal.

I finally got fed up with hearing it, and reminded her there's a fine line between "anal" and "rectal".

We get along great now.

Depending on where I am sitting, the time at my desk varies up to 10 minutes. When I look at my cell phone, it's five minutes later than my computer. When I look at my computer, it's five minutes later than when I look at my desk phone. Maybe I just have lots of tiny little time zones right here in my office.

By the way, it's warm and sunny in Tempe. I realize nobody asked. Just thought I'd mention it.
