e-mail address on resume

Has anyone on the forum ever put a resume aside or had the thought to put one aside becuase of the applicants e-mail address?

I was going through some resumes this afternoon and noticed a very unprofessional address on one. It actually had the word "#itch" in it!!! xflash
(Sorry to the forum police)x:=| , but come on people, DUH!!

Have any of you experienced anything similar, I would love to hear that Ohio isn't the only place with this problem!

I've seen quite a few unprofessional email addresses. I get a lot of resumes from our internet postings and I've seen some with the n-word and other derogatory terms in them. I won't toss it aside solely based on the address, but usually when they have something like that in their address the resume itself isn't any better.

I am often amazed that people who have "cutesy" e-mail addresses on their resumes seem not to know how to use spell checker and for computer skills list aol.

I think the email address is one of those things that a lot of people don't think about when putting together their resumes.

I've seen several rather telling email addresses. Obviously when they were created the person felt a sense of privacy and personal humor, never thinking for a moment that it might sink his resume. I have also opened some resumes on the internet with some interesting titles, you know, the title they saved the resume under, like; "IBM 3rd Resume w/o Supv. Identity", or "Frank's Resume omit Last Job". People just don't think sometimes. With all due respect to the women NASCAR fans, I've also unfairly sized applicants up (usually female) when I saw their email address was something like, "3FOREVER" or "BUDBITCH GO 34". It's somewhat like the assessments we make when we look at our applicant with 4 tatoos. I know, I know, it's totally unfair......Or is it? Right when people are screaming at you, "Don't you dare assess me", they have tatoos and email addresses and t-shirts and bumper stickers that scream just as loudly, "Assess me, Assess me, look at my statement, this is who I am!"

Yep. These things rank right up there with people who let their toddlers put the message on their answering machine. I don't know how many times I have called an applicant and have to listen to a baby "babble" around for 20 or 30 seconds. I guess they think this is cute, but I find it irritating. I usually just hang up.

I returned someone's call once and their answering machine started off with a cow mooing for several seconds. They had a farm and they recorded one of their cows. Laughed so hard I had to hang up without leaving a message.

I agree with Don, they do say who the person is, not the persona they put on for the interview. Vulgar tattoos are also an item that is judged. I would think that any applicant for a position would want to put their best forward to the potential employer. I don't get it. Oh, and the people that use profanity in the interview??? What is with that?

I know I am probably old fashioned, but I don't want to see an applicant's navel. Also, I do get turned off to overdone piercing of the face. But, a pet peeve, I really get turned off to resumes with mispelled words.

I was always taught and continue to teach todays supervisors that an applicant only gets one opportunity to make a great first impression, so the way they "look" (are prepared and present themselves) at their "official job interview" will likely be the best they will ever be. And then they wonder why they were not hired.... beats me.

Now, Gillian, if Whatever is perfectly honest, she will tell us that she did grab her dictionary and check the spelling of mispelled. Every time I use it, I have to look it up out of fear of mispelling it, and I'm a little nervous about these sentences since I didn't look it up this time. So, Whatever, did you?

I judge e-mail addresses, tattoos and wardrobe. I want to hire people who are concious of their image, and understand the importance of presenting themselves in the best possible light. I'd rather pass up a good applicant through being too choosy, than ignore my gut and hire a bad one. I also have no problem telling someone that they didn't get full consideration based on those factors.

"tranquility (I will reveal my whole email address when needed)" (Does she think I sell email addresses online?)

Lately, we've had a rash of applicants who have been using a canned resume program. They have left the directions in their resume and then typed in their information. Such as: (from an actual resume)

OBJECTIVE: (Using action words to maximize the impact, describe how your background and strengths would make you a strong candidate for the position you are seeking. This section should be concise, contain action words, and should sell your most marketable experiences and abilities.) MY CAREER OBJECTIVE IS TO FIND A JOB I LOVE DOING. I ONLY HAVE A LITTLE MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE BUT I'M VERY WILLING TO LEARN. I THINK I MAY BE WHAT YOUR LOOKING FOR.

This person also was responsible for "checking out customers" in one of her jobs. I guess she must have worked at a mall.

While reviewing resumes this morning I came upon an applicant for our front desk position whose e-mail address was "vixen"-something. While it piqued my interest, I did reluctantly set the resume aside. x;-)

AprilShowers, I don't know about you - but I think we missed the boat on putting our "professional" sounding email addresses on our resumes. With the enthusiam Parabeagle and others have shown about interviewing these folks - I may have to change mine!

Well, come on, now! You may find that this, uh, "enthusiasm," as you so delicately put it x;-) is merely our dedication to our profession. I remember like it was yesterday when I asked my college prof what he thought was the most rewarding aspect of HR and he told me recruitment and selection. "Why?" I asked. "Because it's a great way to meet girls," he said.

By the way, it just occurred to me as I looked through these posts...

On March 13, "AprilShowers" apparently moved from Missouri to Ohio, posting from one state in the morning and the other state in the afternoon.
