A policy on the use of cell phones in the work place

LAST EDITED ON May-01-01 AT 05:37PM (CST)[p]I am looking for a policy that you may have written to govern the use of cell phones not only in the physical work place but in the car while employees are on the job whether in their own cars or in a company car. Does any one have one already in use that they think is a good one? Also, do you have a written policy that governs the use of company cell phones for non-business uses that may incorporated in the above refernced policy?

Please let me know asap. Thanks. JKB

• Our policy covers all technological equipment, cell phones, pagers, palm pilots, etc.
Use of this equipment is not permissable while in a vehicle or on equipment that is in operation. The vehicle/equipment must be parked prior to using the equipment.
While interacting with customers or in meetings, cell phone and pager ringers must be turned off.
Hope this helps.
• We have a cell phone use policy in our handbook. It is as follows:

Cellular phone usage while driving is strictly prohibited when conducting company business. When the situation arises, the employee must pull the vehicle into a parking lot, and remain in park until the call has been completed.
• How about a policy regarding cell phones inside the workplace? They can be more disruptive than pagers in that the call demands immediate attention rather than a callback when the employee goes on break, etc.

We require that all communication devices be placed on silent mode. We'd like to ban cell phones from work areas, but that would be too difficult to enforce.
• We have a section in our handbook which lists standards of conduct, some of which can lead to immediate termination. One such policy includes carrying/using a personal communications device while on the job which includes pagers, mobile phones or radios. It also states that we are not responsible for such devices and employees are discouraged from bringing them on property.
• We have an issue with employees bringing their personal cell phone to work and using it for personal calls. While this does free up company land lines, it still robs the coumpany of their productive time.

Our policy on phone use generally states that employees are to limit calls to on "essential matters" or emergencies, and that all calls should be restricted to 2 minutes or less. This is true whether it is a personal phone or cell phone.

We also state the calls of a personal nature are only to be made on breaks and this applies to the use of company phones or personal cell phones.
• This is a good policy to have. Companies have been held liable when allowing employees to use cell phones while driving. South Carolina is seriously contemplating legislation prohibiting anyone from using a cell phone while driving. I have seen a lot of erratic driving on the interstates when people are attempting to dial or drop their phones. In the workplace, they can be disruptive, but we are a medical facility and just about all of us have pagers or phones so we can be reached readily. Most employees keep their devices on silent when at work.
