Credit Checks for Maryland Employers
For those employers in MD or for those that work for larger companies that have locations in MD, be aware that the MD General Assembly is considering a bill that would ban credit checks as part of background checks for employment reasons. Other than those required by law to do a credit check, employers would not be able to run a credit check to be used for an employment related decision (hiring, firing or determining compensation). This is a priority bill for the MD Senate, although the Governor has not taken a stance on this yet.
I have heard there are at least 10 other states considering bills like this as well.
An interesting time in HR right now. It seems like things are changing by the day and if you are not staying on top of these changes, you can get behind quickly.
Oregon appears to be getting a similar ban State Lawmakers Vote to Bar Credit Checks by Employers
