That's What She Said

Greetings,

For the fourth year in a row, That's What She Said, a blog written by Employers Counsel Network (ECN) attorneys at Ford & Harrison LLP, has been selected as one of the 100 best law blogs by the ABA Journal. Ford & Harrison attorneys also write and edit Employment Law Letters for us in Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, and Texas.

That's What She Said follows the employment law shenanigans of Michael Scott and the Dunder Mifflin/Sabre crew on NBC's "The Office" every week. Attorney bloggers estimate the dollar value of each episode's potential employment litigation claims and provide lots of teaching points in a fun framework. In the Blawg 100 contest, TWSS is nominated in the "For Humor" category.

While you're at it, keep in mind that the ABA allows you to vote for as many as 12 of the 100 nominated blogs. There are many good ones, but here are two more we would recommend, both found in the "In Labor" category:

Texas Employment Law Letter editor Mike Maslanka (with Ford & Harrison, too) is nominated for his lively blog, Work Matters. As the ABA describes it, Mike "covers interesting labor law rulings when he sees them, but he generally looks at the bigger picture, writing about how lawyers can create fair and peaceful workplaces, and counsel their clients to do the same."

At Delaware Employment Law Blog, attorneys with Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, LLP, in Wilmington preview labor law cases before the Supreme Court, post on federal labor laws being considered, discuss social media at work, and note events for Delaware practitioners. Molly DiBianca appears to be the ringleader, with Adria Martinelli, Bill Bowser, and others contributing timely content. They also produce an excellent Delaware Employment Law Letter.
Here are links to the three blogs in case you want to check them out:

  • Who would have guessed!? Behind the scenes, it actually takes a well-oiled workplace to create the employment law and HR chaos that you see each Thursday night on The Office. Matt Rita of Denver -- one of the seven Ford & Harrison attorneys who write the weekly blog That's What She Said -- has just returned from visiting the TV set in Van Nuys, California, where he got to chat with the actors and watch the filming of an upcoming episode. While Matt can't reveal any plot lines in advance, he did notice 5 things that make the TV show click: Coordination, Planning, Flexibility, Judgment, and Attention to Detail. Ironic, huh -- those are of course the same things that often get short shrift from Michael Scott and crew. Check out Matt's inside look at http://bit.ly/eUFTT3

And while you're at it, if you haven't already done so, please consider voting for TWSS in the ABA Journal's Blawg 100 contest. More details in the previous entry on this Forum thread, or you can go straight to http://bit.ly/eFN9o6 and vote. Registration is required, but it's quick and painless. If it'll help, I'll send you an "I Voted" sticker afterwards :) We've slipped into second place (in the "For Fun" category) this morning, but a lot of precincts haven't reported yet. Thanks for your help! tk
  • Greetings again, all,
At the risk of appearing to be talking to myself in this thread, I want to send out one final urgent request to the tech-savvy HR Hero Nation for some help with this contest! Unfortunately, THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID -- our weekly blog about the TV show The Office -- started the day 25 votes behind the leader in the ABA Journal's annual "Blawgs 100" contest (rating the top 100 legal blogs in the country). We're competing in the "For Fun" category. There are no physical prizes -- only national bragging rights. But that won't stop us from making our best effort to close the gap before the ABA Journal's "close of business" later today, when the polls will shut down for good.

If you haven't yet voted, you'll need to register and get a password, but it is a VERY quick process, I promise. Yesterday, with HR Heroes everywhere (plus family members, friends, and maybe even a few dead people) casting their ballots across the country, we momentarily edged ahead of the dratted "Law Law Land" blog in the "FOR FUN" category, 237-230. But at daylight, we had slipped back behind by, gulp, some 25 votes. So, it appears that Law Law Land knows many dead people, too. Your vote is definitely needed.

Category: Click on FOR FUN (then scroll down to the bottom, THAT's WHAT SHE SAID is the last one on the list)

it's fun but educational -- employment law attorneys with the Ford & Harrison firm watch each weekly episode of The Office and chronicle the liability created by the workplace shenanigans of Michael Scott and crew.

All kidding aside about the contest, I hope everyone is having fun and enjoying life during the holidays -- and work, too, if you are there today. May 2011 bring you and your colleagues and staff lots of workplace peace and prosperity. tk
  • Greetings, all,
Cleaning out some stuff today and realized that I never closed the loop on this thread. It was a fight to the finish, but congratulations go to Law Law Land =D> which came in first in the "For Fun" category of the ABA Journal's annual Blawgs 100 contest. They had 481 votes.

That's What She Said finished second in that category -- and second overall among the 100 legal blogs that had been nominated for the monthlong contest. We collected 439 votes. Thank you very much, readers, friends, family members -- everyone who voted for TWSS. And especially, we tip our hats to the eight Ford & Harrison attorneys who take turns writing each week's fun and educational blog entries.

An important plot line will be scrutinized in TWSS over the next few months as Michael Scott (played by Steve Carell) leaves the cast. Will the company promote from within (Kelly, Darryl, Dwight, Andy, etc.)? Or will they go outside and bring in some new blood to lift up the struggling paper company? If you have any thoughts on how things may or should play out, please go here http://bit.ly/eUjyAg and join the discussion. tk
  • Maybe Ricky Gervais will replace Steve Carrell. That would be a hoot!
