We just had a reminder memo circulate advising each employee of our Internet use policy. In that reminder it states that participating in on-line chat rooms is not allowed. Do you consider the Forum an on-line chat-room?

Though we sometimes communicate almost instantaneously, I would not consider this a chat-room. As I understand it, chat-rooms are more like instant messaging.

I think Ray is right. But since your policy doesn't define chat rooms, you might want to get your boss' OK to use the Forum. I can't imagine he/she would object, but it could prevent a misunderstanding down the road.

In practice and by design, it is not a chat-room. But there are frequent times when it does resemble one. On those occasions it would be hard to convince your boss that it's not one.
