Yo, Ray, does that mean you actually practise nihilism? Do tell. Have you abandoned all your morals? Or just the the ability to distinguish right from wrong?
It was easy to see you started this post as a salute to rebels everywhere. You actually helped out the cause, if there is one, because the number of total posts jumped up. Of course, now all you have to do is start a bunch of threads for no other reason than to try to thwart a possible goal which wasn't even agreed to, and you can succeed in dropping the number again.
Personally, though I don't mind a small goal here that we might reach in a few hours, I can think of nothing more boring than to try to limit the number of new topics. So go ahead Ray, start new threads or don't start new threads. Either way you make no difference.
ritaanz, Obviously Ray does practice nihilism. Based on his recent posts, I would say definition #3, especially the sefl destructive part fits to a T.
1. total rejection of established laws and institutions. 2. anarchy, terrorism, or other revolutionary activity. 3. total and absolute destructiveness, esp. toward the world at large and including oneself: . 4. Philosophy. a. an extreme form of skepticism: the denial of all real existence or the possibility of an objective basis for truth. b. nothingness or nonexistence.
5. (sometimes initial capital letter) the principles of a Russian revolutionary group, active in the latter half of the 19th century, holding that existing social and political institutions must be destroyed in order to clear the way for a new state of society and employing extreme measures, including terrorism and assassination. 6. annihilation of the self, or the individual consciousness, esp. as an aspect of mystical experience.
Yes, and the prevalent Postmodernist theory so prevalent in the past generation or so and which threatens to redefine societal mores as we know them is derivative of Nihilism. It leads to such inanities as renaming holidays.
LAST EDITED ON 02-27-08 AT 11:34AM (CST)[br][br]A Deconstructionist would tell you that since there is no ultimate truth that our prediliction for recognizing these specific holidays is itself a form of repression. It is merely a way for white male Christians to perpetuate their control over others. By hanging onto these outmoded so-called holidays, we are forcing others to accept our perception of our own truth or reality. Even Thanksgiving is offensive because of how we treated the Native Americans that were cheated and displaced by white male Europeans. We are giving thanks for offensive behavior. Thanksgiving should be a day of mourning and pennance for our horrible behavior.
You know, I used to think Paul was the worst one for stirring up the pot, but Ray has him beat hands down. Poor Paul. And he doesn't appear to even be here to give Ray a run for the money.
As Ray said earlier, he is bored and is doing his best to add some excitement. Poor baby.
Ray just enjoys the occasional opportunity to use so many big words that the reader's eyes begin to roll back in one's head after having read approximately one quarter of the paragraph. I gave up and moved on to the next post.
I AM the nice girl. That's why my sarcasm has no bite.
Speaking of nothing, how many of you are familiar with the song "The Bird is the Word"? Maybe that is not the name of the song, but it's part of the lyrics Several people older than me had never heard of it.
The song has been running through my head for two days.
Bird, bird, bird. Bird is the word. Well don't you know about the bird? Well, everybody knows that the bird is the word!

Play nicely children!!!
It explains the attitude where you reject all philosophical and ethical principles. You shun tradition in politics, religion and morals.
Sounds like Ray is stirring the pot again.

This was like throwing live bait into a pool of baracudas.

I'm impressed, Ray. x:-)
