Actually, we used to get President's Day off while my hubby got MLK Day off. He was home while I was working, and I often ended up working while he was working. It is amazing what you can get done on a holiday where many are still working.
Now we only get the big 6, which means 6 holidays in about 7 months, and 0 holidays for about 5 months. It is a LOOONNNGGGG stretch.
My 2nd grader brought home a booklet about MLK on Friday. It could be named "All About Martin Luther King in Five Pages and Less Than 25 Words."
It kinda sorta hit the high points. Showed people of various races sitting on the bus wherever they darn well pleased.
King wasn't even in the history books yet, when I was in school. Amazing that he was so recent in history that he's just landed in the history books in the last decade or two.
The Berlin Wall coming down should appear in school history books around 2024.
Not so fast there, ACU Frank. January 21st is actually the birthday of Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson. R. E. Lee was born January 19th. Let's assume ray knows and respects more history than you do.
I was working yesterday, and it was an extremely rough day, which kept me in the office from 8am until 7pm. At least I had the night off from my second job (which I'm assuming was due to the MLK holiday).
I was home with the family. Actually my wife was at her PC most of the day catching up on her work, grading papers, etc., the boys were mostly on World of Warcraft and Rune Scape so me and the cats just hung out and watched old movies while I attempted to catch up on my ironing chores. Ya just gotta luv all those bank holidays.
Since ritaanz resurrected the thread, I thought I'd add my mother's insight on MLK Day - she called me and said, "Do you realize that all our holidays are to remember dead people?"
You know, she's got a point....kind of morbid, huh?
MLK Day - dead President's Day - dead presidents Washington and Lincoln 4th of July - dead soldiers Memorial Day - self explanatory Columbus Day - dead Christmas - dead Thanksgiving - so I disagreed with her on this one, but she has a point - dead pilgrims Halloween - All Soul's day Labor Day - I disagree with this one too - anyone got an explanation for it?
Maybe I was saying that anyone who would be celebrating Lee's birthday on the wrong day probably can't read. Maybe that's what I was saying. Wouldn't that have been correct?
Of course, anyone who assumes I was implying that people celebrating Lee's birthday are likely inbred illiterate crackers... well, I decline to confirm or deny that point of view.
Not politically correct but Coffee, you can add two more to your list: Good Friday - Jesus died Passover - Roman babies died
But regarding the moll's manners comment, how can a #1 (first) contribution be a critical comment about anyone on the thread? And where is "manners" listed in the thread bylaws? Geez, so sensitive; is moll related to you Rita??????? hehehehehe
LAST EDITED ON 01-31-08 AT 09:34PM (CST)[br][br]During MLK "week" at school, my six year old was required to complete the following sentence;
"I have a dream...."
He wrote "that everyone will have ice cream to eat."
My boy is going to be the POTUS when he's old enough, and probably also will achieve world peace with his ice cream plan. Who wouldn't vote for a kiddo like that?
Yeah, it all sounds good, until some frozen yogurt whacko takes him out. Save your kid now... the road to POTUS is lined with the remains of those who could not defend plain or sugar against the onslaught of waffle cone hoards.

We're closed today, but I'm working anyway.

We get two weeks off in December (plus my vacation time) so its all good in the hood.
I do have to have a conversation with my 11 year old about Martin Luther King as part of her homework.

If they can, they're most likely on "the other board".
Brush up on your history AND your manners.
