As professionals we ought to publish common sense rules for those applying for a job. For instance, when you send a resume by snail mail – postage due – not a good thing. Unless you have mastered the space-time continuum star trek thing, a regressive employment history does not work. Example: I worked at XYZ from 2004 to 1994. Certain states in our great country have laws prohibiting the use of cells phones when driving – do we need a law stating you must turn your cell phone off when in an interview?! Purple crayon – not a good tool for resume writing. When the company name is 3 letters long, I know this asking a lot, spell it correctly.

If you have any common sense rules for this topic – let me know. By the way, to each: have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

How about sending a resume in an e-mail attachment from a program that practically no one but said applicant has? (Not only does it open as gibberish - if at all - but I usually think it's a virus and hit DELETE.

Or how about applying for a job online and submitting several times? Especially when said applicant isn't remotely qualified.

One of my favorites is to recieve a resume in an envelope from the applicant's current employer, or, current technology; an email from the current employer's email system. Another is seeing an applicant pull up in the parking lot in their current employer's truck/vehicle.

I love it when they are late. It's always I got lost, got stopped by a train...use Mapquest or fing the facility the day before and PLEASE leave early to account for traffic, etc. I also enjoy when they bring their kids to the interview.

Or the guy who calls the telephone number in the ad and asks for Randy (our retired president). He pretends to be a close friend. How comes he doesn't know Randy is now in Santa Fe???

How about the applicant that wants to reschedule the interview because another company they really want to work for can only see her at the time she originally scheduled for us?

How about having your reference call us and beg us to give you a job before you've even filled out or turned in the application? Not to mention, said reference calls HR Assistant, Director and then the CEO pushing that the applicant needs a job and said applicant has no qualifications.

We also provided some of our facilities to a very large/popular name retailer coming to town so they could interview and take applications for about 600-800 applicants. One girl showed up for her interview in flip flops and cut offs and got the job!
