What would Miss Manners do?

I was just in the ladies' restroom in our office when someone came in and went into the other stall. While in there her cell phone rang. She answered it and proceeded to carry on a conversation. In the meantime, I am finished and ready to flush the toilet. My dilemma: Do I flush and let the person on the other end of the cell phone know where my co-worker is? Do I wait until the call is finished and it appears that I was listening?
For the record, I flushed. I figured if someone is that glued to her cellphone she deserved that background noise!

Drawing from a 'high upper German' background, I say flush. Reason: One must retain his/her proper sanitary rituals and/or manners even when those around us neglect to exhibit their own.

Happened to me once and I flushed. However, I was very tempted to pretend that I was extremely nauseous.

Reminds me of the Austin Powers movie with Tom Arnold in the next stall. Perhaps the addition of a few noises would have been appropriate. Maybe even a loud plea for a "mercy flush" would have driven the point home. OK, now I am embarrassed.

Actually Marc, it's called a 'courtesy flush'. When one walks into a bathroom or restroom and is standing at the sink, or other 'stand-up' porcelain fixture, only to realize someone is occupying a stall and emitting a tremendously foul odor, the sink-stander is obliged to say, rather politely, "Hey, how about a courtesy flush?" It sends a message that a flush is essential to tolerable air quality.

I vote for either a real fart or one made by pressing the lips against the back of the wrist and pushing air out of the lungs as rapidly and forcefully as possible. It would send a message to both of them. Then exit and have her wonder 'who was that masked (wo)man'. Watch her eyes the rest of the day as they dart around the room trying to figure it out.
