OLD SHOES!!

Okay, I'm curious: Who can boast to possessing the OLDEST pair of serviceable shoes? I submit that I can. I have a pair of old, nylon Nikes that I purchased in 1974 that I still wear and my original boots from basic training (1975). Still wear those from time to time, too.

Don't knock Nike too much....My 12 year old son just finished the "Stock Market Game" and his purchase of Nike stock put his team over the top to finish in the #1 place in the District and 2nd place in the region... Good enough for a paid trip to the state wide celebration in St. Louis in a couple of weeks.

Me, I still have my ROTC dress parade shoes from 1970. I must admit this is all I have from that era that I can still fit in......

I still have a pair of old sandals with the tire treds on the bottom from 1968. Not very comfortable, but they came in handy when I played the part of Judas in the Passion play. The Nikes wouldn't have done it.

I still have my 1966 red, high-top, canvass, 'Chuck Taylor' Converse All Stars, with the original laces and a girl's name written in ink on the circle on the side of one of them. My son wore these red tennis shoes with a tuxedo to dress up day when he was a high school senior.

Honey, if you had a pair of Chuck Taylor signature Converse, hi or lo top, you were SOMEbody! Especially in red. A few guys had yellow but those were hard to find. They had a special squeak on a gym floor that could not be duplicated. $150 Air Nikes ain't got nothin' on nine dollar Converse's.

When we moved back home after military time in 1973, my hubby (Mr. Frugality) found an old pair of Florsheims in an old garage we were tearing down. One shoe had the tongue missing. He made a new tongue, sewed it in with an ancient Singer treadle machine, and still wears them from time to time.

I personally think shoes should be replaced every 90 days, but there we go into that shoe thread again.

The only question I have is, Where does he wear them? Would you let him wear them up to the bank to the Christmas party, or would you claim you didn't know who he was? This is the test of a marriage.

Of course in the late 60's you had to have Converse AllStars. I think our High School Coach had a deal worked out with the only store in town that sold them. I remember having a couple pair of Converse Jack Purcell shoes, designed especially for tennis with a smooth slap sole and the small blue line inserted across the toe. I would love to have another pair or two of these. I ocassionally see a pair being worn on tv or in a movie, recent movies I must add. Wonder if they are making them again or if they were purchased at yard sales.

1974 = 3 years before I was born. x:) I do have some Reebok's from about 13 years ago though. I guess I'll have to hang on to them for a little while longer to be in this contest! x:D

Not that she'd wear them, but my grandmother still has the shoes she wore to my mother's wedding 35 years ago. But she's from the school of throw NOTHING out, you never know when you'll need it. All anyone needs to do to figure out where I got my shoe obsession is look in her closet - it is definitely hereditary!

Don't get me started. When my grandma died we found 9 year old CHOCOLATE in her basement and 12 year old canned peaches. Yeeesh!

Oh boy, it sounds like we can trade pack rat Nana stories! She was always a very sharp dresser and has given me some very cool outerwear she bought when she came to the United States (in 1952). I have a great faux leopard hat, a gorgeous full length velvet cape and two three quarter sleeve crushed velvet waist length swing coats, you know, the kind you have to wear with gloves? Back then she picked them up in a thrift shop out of desparation, she had never experienced a cold winter and I think thats why she has so many coats today, she remembers how cold she was that first winter in Boston.
