Employer ability to collect over-paid wages

Hello,
I am wondering about the following situation:
An employee is paid on a commission basis, so the paycheck amounts vary considerably. Employer switched payroll companies, and the employee was paid too much through direct deposit. It was an error by either the company or the payroll department. Neither party noticed until six months later, by which time employee had left the company.
Employer would like to collect the amount of overpaid wages from the former employee, and employee objects. Does the employer have a right to repayment in this situation?
This is in Oregon, but I imagine the answer would be the same for most states.
Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.
