pay EEs for study time

We are a Montana restaurant company that requires all employees to pass a menu test within the first 14 calendar days of hire. We pay EEs for time spent taking the test, do we have to pay them for their own study time?

I don't have an answer, but wanted to put my 2 cents in.

If your employees are required to know the menu, I assume it is because they have to deal with the items on it all the time. If so, they are getting on the job training. It is reasonable to expect that they will pick it all up within 2 weeks. If they need more time, you can always loan them a copy for them to take home (at their request.)

We don't pay employees for study time when any kind of certification is required, but most of those positions are exempt. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
