FLSA and Min Wage

I work in a small non-profit in Mi. We hire quite a few Home Health Aides. We have been paying them 5.00 an hour, not 5.15, for orientation and training. Then they are paid 7.75 an hour. I was under the impression that training did not have to be paid at the minimum wage. Can anyone say definatively?

  • I believe if you will go to the following site it explains clearly who does not have to be paid the minimum wage and that is for only 90 days.

    http://www.dol.gov/compliance/guide/minwage.htm

"The Act requires employers of covered employees who are not otherwise exempt to pay these employees a minimum wage of not less than $5.15 an hour as of September 1, 1997. Youths under 20 years of age may be paid a minimum wage of not less than $4.25 an hour during the first 90 consecutive calendar days of employment with an employer. Employers may not displace any employee to hire someone at the youth minimum wage."

    I hope this helps.
