After showing up for work no work available

If an employee show up for work and we don't have any work for him/her ( for any reason). Do we have to pay him/her? If yes, how many hours? Some people say 2 hours others 4 hours. I thought you might have to pay for their travel time. Do we have a federal law regulating this?

Since you are in Arizona, Arizona state law applies.
I don't know if Arizona law requires a report or show up pay or not and, if it does, what the minmimum is.

Federal law, FLSA, does NOT require any report pay.

AZ doesn't require anything other than what FLSA requires. I just went to a seminar yesterday re: the upcoming changes in wage & hour regs and the presenting attorney confirmed that AZ will still follow FLSA with no additions.

There might not be a federal or state law requiring any compensation, BUT, how many times do you think an EE would come in only to be sent home and get nothing? We rarely have nothing at all for an EE to do. Painting..cleaning..organizing.... However if we do have to ask someone to go home we pay a minimum of 4 hours.

We have the same policy with the four hours pay. Also had that in a union contract situation. I agree with Popeye's sentiment on this one.

There are no Fed or AZ state laws requiring to pay ee for showing up and er sending them home but, I would compensate 4 hrs for showing up with intentions to work.
