Free CPR Classes on your own time

Do I have to pay employees who volunteer to particiapate in CPR classes? The classes will be on their own time (5:00pm - 9:00pm for two consecutive evenings) The company is paying for the class.

Thanks.

  • Not if the training is strictly voluntary and the employees are given the impression that they must become certified as a condition of employment. But, hold on; I would recommend you pay them if their training will benefit the employer. For example, if their training adds them to your group of first aid first-responders and your company is required to have such a group of trained employees. We do that and would pay them if it were on their own time or when we bring them in off-shift for such training.
