On-call (Beeper Pay) for Exempts? Execs?

Hello!

I'd like to hear how you handle on-call or beeper pay for exempt employees...do they receive any additional compensation or not...if so, how do you compensate for being on-call, if they have to come in or handle something over the phone or from home (PC/blackberry). Does anyone provide this for top execs?

I have carried a beeper for many years and even carry it when I am off in case someone has an emergency. I have never been compensated "extra" for carrying a beeper. I just consider this part of the job.

We had this type of situation for licensed marriage and family counselors. They got $1.80 an hour for carrying the beeper, which rotated among the 4 staff involved on a weekly basis. If they had to make a client contact, they got thier "normal" hourly pay. No overtime premiums.

Top exec's do not get beeper pay or any other hourly compensation. The company I am with now rarely pays a bonus, but most of my other companies did. That was how the Exec's got additional pay.

I should add that this is the state public health lab, and the person is on call to respond to calls from the CDC & possible bio or chemical terrorism

Perhaps you should get some input from firefighters or the police for handling these types of situations. I don't know how these types of agencies handle exempts when it comes to "extra" hours.
