SALARY SCALES

I'm trying to create salary scales for our company. We continuously do salary surveys however, we have not set any guidelines or ranges. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Hi Tina,

    Welcome to the forum!

You already have the salary surveys and most of them show ranges for job the various job descriptions. Most of those ranges have a low, a midpoint, and a high.

Compare your job descriptions to those listed in the surveys and try to find the best matches. This can be a bit difficult because the descriptions are very general and most of us have specific aspects of a job that have greater and lesser degrees of difficulty than the descriptions listed.

As to guidelines, are you talking about a hiring policy or how to handle annual raises? You may also need to make salary adjustments if your ranges are significantly higher or lower than your marketplace.

AFter all, these issues have to do with attracting and retaining qualified employees. Once finalized, you will need to look at these ranges and descriptions annually to make sure you are still in line. Turnover and your success in hiring will tell you a bit about how competitive your ranges are. And if you establish hiring ranges, make sure you have some discretion built in so you can land that occasional superstar that walks in the door and demands dollars at the high end.
