Using Volunteers

Hi. We are looking at posting an opportunity for volunteers to assist in our medical office. The volunteer(s) could set their own hours, we would only recommend preferred hours, and they would not be penalized in any way for being late or not showing up. Their efforts would be applied to assisting people who need access to a wheelchair, those who can't read and/or write, and escorting new patients to the correct department. The only perks would be free lunch at least once a week and free beverages. The only paperwork we would require is a confidentiality statement for HIPAA.
Question: I recently read about some hospitals that use volunteers in violation. Am I asking for trouble by using volunteers if I offer them perks without pay? Also, I would prefer to do a background check, even though those I have in mind are well known. Would this be a violation? Thanks for your replies, Mich
