Hearing Test

We are conducting a Hearing Test on Monday. Our Plant is not working that day but the employees must come in to have the test done. It could take from 10-20 minutes per employee. Do we have to pay them a minumium of 2 hours? Since they are not working just taking a test ( mandatory) I thought that they only need to be paid for the time that they are here. Please advice since Monday is coming around the corner. Thanks!

  • Without researching the issue and without knowing what State you are in, I respond as follows. If you are requiring employees to come in to take a mandatory test, them you must pay the employee for their time. As for the answer to how much you must pay them, I don't know without researching the issue contrasting Federal Law with your State Law. At any rate, get out the checkbook and get ready to write! This is my two cents....
  • Are you unionized? If so then your collective bargaining agreement probably covers the minimum amount of time an employee must be paid for reporting to work. If not, and if there aren't any state guidelines regarding minimum amount of time (I can't think of any federal regulations), you should just be paying them for the time they are there. If you are mandating they report for the test, they have to be paid.
