Hourly Worker Moved from 2nd Shift to 1st Shift

Are we liable if we move a 2nd Shift Maintenace hourly employee to the 1st shift into a production position. His hourly rate of pay will remain the same.
He is not happy about the move. States he was hired for maintenance. Our employee handbook makes no reference to such a move in job position in our plant.
