I have been reading on where SSA will be looking heavily at the matching of SSN & Names. My question is if an employee gives you a copy of their card then what should you do? I am now calling SSA and verifying the numbers but what should I do with ee who no longer work for me if the name & number don't match?

I would do nothing for people who no longer work at your organization. Your responsibility ends at the time of their departure.

What about people who already work for you, but their ssn has not been verified? We just started verifying the first of September, but we still have a long list of unmatch ssn for current ees.

I have checked all of my current ee and only have a name problem with one. But I know that I have a problem with a former ee, I tried to track them down but suprisingly their phone number no longer works and I get no response to mail.

I would not worry about the former employee. You have done your best. With the current employees, before taking any adverse action against them, you need to give them the chance to present the correct social security number. (Sometimes the reason they don't match is just a mistake or a name change that has not gotten through to the government [like from marriage]).

We have done that, way back in July. Everyone gave me the same ssn that we had. I told them they need to go to the SSA and get this sorted out but, NO one has made any progress! The controller says we might be able to ge the $50 fine revoked if we show we made an effort to get the problem resolved. I don't trust the IRS to do this. What should we do?
