Minimum wage vs. Leavable wage

  • The minimum wage is the minimum hourly rate allowed by federal and state regulations. Sometimes they are different, in which case you go with the higher rate. A living wage is a pay rate set as a minimum by a local government entity. There are a number of cities which have passed these laws and they are higher than the minumum wage. Some of them have dual rates - a lower rate if the employees get benefits and a higher one if they do not. As far as I know most living wage laws apply to businesses which have contracts with a particular city, although I have heard of proposed regulations which would apply to business located within a city.
