Vacation accrual

Our vacation year currently runs July 1 - June 30 but our sick and Floating holidays run Jan - Dec.
(yes it is a nightmare.). I want to propose changing the vacation year to match the other 2. I need ideas on how to manage the changeover without hurting employees and without having mngt thinking they are "giving away" too many days.

Also: our vacation days currently accrue during the previous year. (ie: I accrued 1 day/month from June '03 - July '04, which I can take between July '04 and June '05). (yes another nightmare). When making the other change, I'd like to get rid of this, too. Would appreciate any ideas on this. (it is bad because if you start in July you have to work 12 months before you get any vacation.). thanks, all.

  • Years ago, we went from an annual anniversary date accrual to a monthly accrual - leave accrues on hire day of each month - amount determined according to length of service:
    thru 5 years of employment - .83 day/mo
    6 thru 10 years - 1.25 day/mo
    over 10 years - 1.67 day/mo

When we made the conversion, we just took everybody's existing vacation balance as of the effective date and added any monthly accruals that would have occurred on a monthly system since their last annual accrual up to that date. Once days are in bank, they are available to be scheduled.
