Employee Health Ins. Bill??

I have an interesting situation that has never happened here before. We have a part time employee who is interested in picking up family coverage. The interesting part is that she doesn't make enough money to cover the bi-weekly deductions. We have decided that we will take a set amount from her check, and that she will pay the balance to our company monthly.

I need to draft some kind of an agreement with her and wanted a little help if possible. Do any of you have a similar situation? What have you done? What kind of grace period for payments have you had?

Thanks SOO much for the help! I appreciate it!

  • We do not offer medical benefits to part-timers so I have never been faced with this problem. You probably should refer to your contract with your carrier to see if there are any provisions for late payments or grace periods.
  • POPEYE is right. You also need to check if your plan even allows part time employees. Many plans allow part-time employees, but only if they work a certain amount of hours. Does your employee qualify?

I admit to some concerns here since employee doesn't make enough to earn the premium. Do you pay a portion of the premium? If so, the employee must be earning a very small hourly rate or working very few hours.

Also, I am assuming that your health plan is not covered under a Section 125 plan. If so, you could be opening up all kinds of problems.

If you have difficulty discovering if your employee can be covered, you might try calling your broker. They should be able to help you out.

    Good luck!
