Coverage for Termed Employee

An employee of a small business (less then 10 people) was termed in November. He was told the company would continue to pay his health insurance up until February 1st which is the renewal time. He has not worked for the company 18 months and in this state, he does not need to be offered COBRA coverage. Must anything be done (i.e. a letter sent to him or something) prior to disenrolling him from the company health insuarnce plan?
