Education Reimbursement

We're looking at introducing an Education Reimbursement program for 2003. One of the major issues we have is how much to budget for the program. Outside of polling employees which we don't want to do), I was hoping other companies could give me an idea of the percentage of the employees who do take advantage of a program of this nature. [We're thinking of allowing reimbursement of $2-3k/year towards degrees or certifications that are work related.] - Thanks!

  • Our agency, with 48 full- and part-time staff members offers $500 per year reimbursement for pre-approved educational expenses across the board. In order to take advantage of this opportunity, the course(s) must be pre-approved by a supervisor. Reimbursement occurs after proof of a passing grade is shown, as well as a receipt for expenses. This policy has been in effect for nearly 5 years and only a mere 5% (at most) took us up on it. I am one of them! x:-)
  • It is hard to budget for because there is no way of really anticipating usage. Usage, however, will be low. We introduced education reimbursement policies last December. With almost 400 employees, I have approved reimbursement for eight employees for a total of about $1,700. I know that we have a few others that have not yet asked for reimbursement. The $$ come out of our general fringe benefit line.
  • We have a generous tuition reimbursement program where all employees with at least one year of service are eleigle for up to $3000 per year towards tuition, fees plus books. Out of 185 employees, we have about 10 employees who use it faithfully throughout the year. It's great when one of our folks graduates. We get them a cake and congratulate them by hosting a small party in their department.
