Leave Verification

I am curious as to what other employers do to verify or confirm that employees whom they suspect are abusing sick leave are indeed at home sick (e.g., telephone calls, survillance, etc.)other than doctor excuses.

  • We have written policy in our handbook that states that anyone off sick for three days or more is required to bring a doctor's statement stating they can return to work at full capacity.

    It also states that a manager MAY request a dr's statement for ANY lost time, based on attendance history.

    Personally, I'm not comfortable with this part of the policy as it leaves too much discretion to the manager, who may not always be consistent or fair in deciding who needs to bring a statement.
