Total Compensation Letters

We would like to begin communicating with our employees about the total compensation package they each receive (combining cash wages and benefits).

Does anyone have a letter they like, use, and are willing to share that works to help employees understand what their real compensation is? I would like to begin this conversation, in a positive way, pretty quickly for two reasons. First, we are a not-for-profit which means our wages can be competitive but never over the top. We offer a great benefit package, and I would like to increase our employees understanding of what it is we really offer in exchange for their time and energy here. Second, as the cost of benefits rises, we may have to ask employees to make some tough choices and I would like to begin to work toward everyone's ability to make informed choices and suggestions.

We are also a non-profit and used a company called Employee Benefits Communications. They provided a great benefit statement at a very reasonable cost. We received such a positive response from our employees - they didn't realize how much their entire benefit package cost the company on an annual basis. You should definitely do this. Any employer that passes up the opportunity to convey total comp costs, including benefits, to ees, is missing a grand opportunity... We periodically run articles about this in our company newsletter. Sometimes we use a pie chart that shows how much goes where for a John Doe ee, with simple bullet points summarizing the components of the package. The pie chart is eye opening. It includes all the insurance costs, retirement plan contributions, social security/medicare contributions, EAP cost, etc. We found it easy to put this together in house in Word.

I work for a broker in Tennessee and we use a program called Fringe Facts to provide total compensation letters to our clients. It sold by Benefit Software Inc. located in California. The program individualizes letters for each employee and can be used year after year.
