Attracting Recruits

I work for a Rendering plant in Wisconsin. We are having a difficult time recruiting production workers. Does anyone have any unique hiring incentives we might consider in order to attract more candidates? Our benefit package already includes health and dental insurance, no cost life and AD&D insurance, no cost STD and LTD insurance, 7 paid holidays, 80 hours of vacation the Jan. 1 after their 1st anniversary date, Flexible Spending, supplemental life insurance, and EAP program, and 401(k)/profit sharing.

  • Sounds like tough labor...what other kinds of plants are in the area?...do they have the same concerns?...perhaps you could ask what they do...and,is the issue recruting or is is retention...sorry for all the questions, but like medicine the problem is not always what it appears to be on the surface...mike maslanka
  • We do have a couple meat packing plants in the area that have similar labor and they are facing the same problems we are. We are already addressing the turnover and with the labor market the way it is right now, turnover is not as much of a problem as it was in the past. In our Hide plant we employ mostly Hispanics and we have found that benefits don't mean as much to them. In our Rendering plant, we have mostly high school graduates or those with GEDs. We are looking at possibly recruiting people with better work ethics and loyalty than what we have been finding.
