Moving from a January 1 accrual date to Anniversary accrual date for Vacation

Our company has been in operation since 1985. This year we would like to transition to an Anniversary accrual date for vacation opposed to our previous policy of January 1. In the past, a new employee was given 40 hr vacation after 6 months and 40 hours vacation after one year of service. Then on January 1, following the one year anniversary the employee gained 80 hours each year. A gross inequity evolves for those employees who start in the early spring. They could actually work a year longer than someone starting in the fall and receive the same amount of vacation.

The problem with the switch is how to smoothly transition employees with more than 1 year of service. These employees are accustomed to having 80 hours of vacation to use throughout the calendar year. We certainly do not want anyone to be shorted. Nor do we want anyone to get more than they are entitled to. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this transition?
