Salary continuance/short term disability

For new employees who become ill during the waiting period prior to being eligible for salary continuance/short term disability benefits, I am wondering what other companies provide? Do you allow the employee time off and hold the position? FMLA is not available but ADA accomodation (leave) may be. If it is not, do you hold the position or terminate employment? How soon do you terminate employment when if they are eligible for LTD? (at point they are eligible? Later?) Assume it is not a Worker's Comp situation.
