Building requirements

I have a client that purchased an existing building. The question is, what is required for handicapped access to the building. i.e. ramps, wider doors, etc.

  • A couple of issues to consider:

Building use -- is the building a place of public accomodation (like a retail store). If so, title III of the ADA applies. I found a great website that I recommend you look at www.ada.gov which talks about title III. It is a bit complicated and may depend on the age of building and size of business (about how much modification is needed). Also, many states have similar laws.

If it is used for non-publicc use, the requirements may be different (for example, if employees are there, he may have to reasonably accomodate any existing disability). Don't forget to consider things like local fire codes, etc.

    Good Luck!!
