TPA and Workers Comp

I am looking for general background information on TPA's. Are TPA's and Workers Comp insurance carriers one in the same? Should TPA's always be used or only in lost wage cases? Could someone please clue me in - this isn't something I have dealt with before. THANKS!

  • TPA's are Third Party Administrators. TPA's are usually used when a company is self insured. I suppose a large company can self-insure worlers' comp but smaller co. do not because wc cases have such a long tail. Depending on the state, sometimes 3, 4 or 5 years can go by before you a case is filed. the risk to self insuring is great.
