Eligibility to work in US - what can we ask

I cannot seem to find a clear answer on this and maybe it is because the answer is not clear. I need to know what I can ask applicants about thier employment status. Is my only legal question, "Are you eligible to work in the US?"

Can we ask if the person is on a work Visa and when it may expire, or if they have a green card? I admit to being totally ignorant here on this one. I'm just not clear on how an employer knows if they are getting into. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    We are a military contractor and those working on sensitive military projects must have at least a Green Card, we must restrict ee's with H1B status to non-military work. So, if a candidate indicates they are not a citizen but are authorized to work in the US, I will explain our government enforced requirements and ask if they are H1B or have a green card.
