Week End Shift

Due to capacity problems, we will be putting on a weekend shift, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They will be 12 hour shifts but we will pay 40 hours.

Anyone have any suggesions as to how we handle holidays? What other problems can be encountered?

We did the same thing the last place I worked. Holidays, PTO, STO were used in 12 hour increments for those staff because that was their normal schedule. However, if they were off for any reason or did not actually work the full 36 hours they didn't get paid for 40.

If they are working Friday, Saturday and Sunday what do you do if the Holiday falls on a Monday?

Several years ago we allowed ee's to work four 10 hour days. If they used a full day of vacation or sick time, they were paid 10 hours from their bank. Holiday was paid at only 8 hours so that they did not receive more paid time off than those working a normal 8 hour shift, they were given the opportunity to make up the additional 2 hours sometime during the rest of the week.

In the past, I worked two twelve hour days and got paid 36 hours with full insurance benfits, but no holiday pay unless the holiday fell on the day worked. Then I received 8 hours holiday & time and a half for hours worked on a holiday. We did not have PTO or sick days so that wasn't an issue and our vaction accrued based on hours worked.
