"Don't hire me yet"

I had a person walk in and ask if we were currently hiring. I said no, but please feel free to put in an application. We will be happy to let you know if somthing opens up.

The longer I think of the thier response the more I question. "I don't want to to be hired yet, because I can't make anymore money this year for my Soc Sec., but I applied for unemployment and need to be putting in applications"

What? So he is on unemployment and but doesn't want a job? Why?

  • In order to continue to receive unemployement checks they must be able to prove that they are actively seeking employment.
  • This is someone you really don't want to hire anyway. First, he is dishonest. He is trying to fake looking for a job but telling the unemployment office that is he is looking for real. Taking money under false pretenses is fraud.

Second, I'll bet Soc Sec counts unemployment against total allowable income. They exclude annuities and interest, but they include all income from work. I'll bet unemployment counts against your total for work income.

    Good luck!

  • I suspected as much. Am I accountable to report this fraud? I am sure its hard to prove.
  • Its easy to demonize the people but keep in mind that the system they are in does not reward self-reliance. It rewards dependence.

There aren't visible incentives to getting off assistance and working a full time job.

I think its great that we have programs to help people. They are essential. But, in my mind, the programs truly succeed when they help people eventually leave assistance and become independent.
  • IMO if the system would allow people to have 2 weeks of unemployment and new employment, they could get people off the rolls. But the second someone gets a job, unemployment is discontinued. So if a new emp has to wait 2 weeks before getting a 1st check, they have nothing to bridge the gap.
  • Unemployment pays much less than regular wages. If someone is on SS they can only earn X per year (based on age). Most people I know that are SS are VERY careful about how much they earn so that they don't have to repay SS. That is probably what this person was doing, hoping they didn't get hired so they wouldn't go over the cap.
