Abolishment of the Civil Service Commission

The City Council is going to abolish our Civil Service Commission. A lot of their duties will now fall on HR. Is there anyone who now has these duties as relates to uniformed officers and if so how do you handle such things as the hiring, promotions, discplinary actions etc.

I can't help you out with this, but will suggest you contact your state law enforcement agencies to see how they handle it (for example, the highway patrol). Perhaps they will share information with you.

I am currently a member of the Civil Service Board in town here and we have talked about abolishing it a couple times. I'd be interested to hear what you find out.

I would first reference your union contracts to see how those things are written and it may include changing that to how you deal with each of those topics. I would start by keeping things consistent to with how the Civil Service Commission does it, just without the board involved and see how things work that way.
