EE to Supervisor Ratios

Help! I don't know if this has been addressed previously, but I've been asked to research typical ratios for EE's to supervisors in a clinic setting (i.e. front office and back office). I've checked with SHRM, but they were not able to assist. I would appreciate any information you might have.

I can't help you specifically with figures for a clinic setting, but I can tell you that the State of Texas (my esteemed employer) is requiring state agencies to achieve a ratio of at least 11 ee's per supervisor/manager. This is being phased in over four years, starting with 8 ee's per supv. the first year, 9 the second, and so forth. This covers the spectrum of agencies with all sorts of functins -- from health and human services, to admin/regularatory, to corrections, etc.

Whether a clinic or manufacturing setting, in my experience, the ideal number is 7, if that's worth anything. Here in the field service and manufacturing industry, we vary between 5 and 15.

We run the gamut here in our manufacturing facility (anywhere from 2 - 18 per supervisor). I supervise 2 and they can drive me crazy any given day.

Cheryl, you hit the nail on the head! Depending on which "2" or which "18" you get to supervise, the ideal number depends on the people that make up those numbers and their required maintenance.

I should have said that our required number of 11 is an average. We have a range of 1 to probably 20+. I've been trying to put my foot down on the situations where someone is considered the official supervisor of only one person, with little success.
