Giving employee copy of their PIP

I have developed and received approval for a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) to use when an employee's performance has dropped below company expectations. The form outlines the improvement plan and review dates.
Our company does not provide copies of evaluations, discipline, etc. I feel the employee need a copy of the improvement plan so they can look back at our expectations. I'm asking who has similar programs and if a copy of the form is provided to the employee. Or do we expect them to take notes during the meeting?
Thanks in advance and have a great weekend. Say a pray for the Gulf Coast.

And I never understood the thought process of a company that did not give the ee a copy of their review or a disciplinary document they were asked to acknowledge.
I agree with others, you should be trying to help the employee succeed. If they don't know what they are doing wrong and you won't share it... how can you expect any to accomplish what you want.
Sounds as if your company needs to change some policies and procedures.

Well, not quite 'anything'. We have personnel files that are three inches thick. I would say anything related to discipline and evaluation.
I was successful in speaking with our legal counsel. He agreed that the employee should have a copy of the PIP.
