hiring/not hiring based on gossip

I have a question that I don't think has ever been addressed in the forums.
My company has an employee, A, who is doing an excellent job for our company and was recently promoted. His partner, B, has been unemployed and has applied to our company. A would like us to hire B. On paper, B looks to be qualified. However, another employee, C, (who worked with both A and B at a previous company) told us that A and B tend to bring in their personal problems to the workplace which makes it uncomfortable for everyone else. A would be supervising B. We do not want to hire someone which would create problems but the only reason I have for thinking this is C (who we think is reliable). Any thoughts?
As a sidenote, A and B are involved in a discrimination suit against their previous employer.
Thanks for your help.
