Externs and Background Checks

Since I see I'm not the only person unfamiliar with the term "externs," I'm providing a definition for others who my find it helpful.

in•tern: an advanced student or graduate usually in a professional field (as medicine or teaching) gaining supervised practical experience (as in a hospital or classroom).

ex•tern: a person connected with an institution but not living or boarding in it; specifically, a nonresident doctor or medical student at a hospital.

It's always fun to learn a new word. Prior to this thread, I'd never heard of externs before. Thanks again to the Forum, for my educational enlightenment!

HRQUEST2: I'll take a stab at your concerns, believing you are asking about an intern and background checks. That would strictly be up to your companies policy. The only known required background and reference checks for private business is the one dealing with the transportation industry. A company is required to do background checks and reference checks before putting a CDL driver into one's OTR driving requirements. But that would not normally include a intern but it could!

If your company has Department of Defense contracts or several other relationships of a sensitive, confidential nature involving security, background checks are required for everybody on the facility grounds, regardless of assignment.

With casinos, you probably perform criminal background checks. Do you limit the check to Nevada or do you perform national checks?

Gee, I am not sure how deep the required background check is for a "sheriffs card," which is what they get after a clean check. In our shop, we have the highway patrol office go ahead and do a national check. This is on top of the "sheriff's card" which would make me think it is only state-wide.

We do not run background checks on our interns or our externs. Do I think that is the best road to take? Not necessarily.
